How does low-voltage landscape lighting work?

Most residential landscape lighting runs on low voltage. A transformer plugs into an outdoor outlet and steps the power down to 12 volts, and a cable carries it to the fixtures. Low voltage is safer to work around than standard household wiring, and it lets us place fixtures where they look best rather than where an outlet happens to be. The transformer is usually paired with a timer or a light sensor so the lights come on at dusk and turn off on their own.

What kinds of landscape lights are there?

A good design layers a few types of light instead of lighting everything the same way. Path lights light walkways and edges so people can see where they are stepping. Spotlights and uplights aim at a tree, a wall, or a column and give the house depth after dark. Wash and wall lights soften a surface, such as a fence or a stone wall. Step, deck, and hardscape lights make stairs and patios safer and nicer to use. Pool-area lighting sets the mood and keeps the deck visible around the water. We keep the number of fixtures sensible. More lights is not better lighting; the goal is for the landscape to glow, not for the yard to look like a parking lot.

How do you avoid glare?

The most common mistake in outdoor lighting is a fixture that points at the viewer. A bright bulb that you can see directly is harsh and washes out everything around it. We aim fixtures so the light lands on the landscape, not in your eyes, and we hide the bulb where we can. After the install we check the lighting at night, because aim and brightness always look different after dark than they do in daylight.

LED fixtures come in different color temperatures. For a home, a warm white around 2700K to 3000K looks the most natural, flatters wood, stone, and plants, and feels welcoming. Very cool, bluish light can make a yard feel like a commercial lot.

Rain, humidity, sprinklers, and in coastal areas salt air all take a toll on outdoor fixtures. We use weatherproof connections to keep moisture out of the wiring, and fixture materials matter too. Brass, copper, and stainless steel hold up better in salt air than painted aluminum. Sprinkler heads and irrigation lines are part of any Florida yard, so we plan cable routes and fixture spots around them.
