What walls can you mount a TV on?

Screens from a small kitchen TV to a large living room display all go on the wall the same way: find solid support, choose a mount rated for the weight, and keep the screen level and at a comfortable height. The wall material decides how we do it. Drywall over wood studs: the mount is lagged into the studs, never into the drywall alone. Brick, stone, and block: masonry anchors rated for the load, drilled with the right bit so the wall is not cracked. Over a fireplace: we plan the height, the heat, and the wire path before any hole is drilled. High on a wall or in a vaulted room: tilting mounts and careful placement so the screen still reads well from the couch. Replacing an old mount: the old bracket comes off and the wall is left ready for the new one.

The mount matters as much as the TV. Each type suits a different room, and the right one makes a daily difference. Fixed mounts hold the TV flat and close to the wall. They are the cleanest look when the screen is at eye level. Tilt mounts let you angle the screen down. They are the best choice when the TV sits above eye level, such as over a fireplace. Full-motion mounts swing out, swivel, and extend. They suit corners, open-plan rooms, and spaces where people watch from more than one spot. Every mount has a weight rating and a hole pattern (often called VESA) that must match your TV. We check both before we start, because a mount that does not match the screen is the most common reason a DIY install goes wrong.

Can you mount a TV over a fireplace?

A fireplace is a popular spot for a TV, but it is also the hardest place to get right. Heat rising from a working fireplace can shorten the life of a screen, and a TV mounted high forces you to look up for hours. Before we mount over a fireplace we talk through how often you use it, how high the mantel sits, and where the cables can go. A tilting or pull-down mount often solves the viewing angle, and the heat question is worth a conversation before drilling, not after. If the wall behind the fireplace is stone or brick, we use masonry anchors and plan the wire path around the opening.

How do you hide the cables?

A wall-mounted TV with cables hanging below it looks unfinished. The clean fix is to run the cables inside the wall, but it has to be done safely. Cables that run inside a wall need to be rated for in-wall use, and power should never run through a wall in an ordinary extension cord. The usual approach is rated cable for HDMI and other signal lines, plus a recessed outlet behind the TV so the power cord has somewhere safe to go. Tell us what is connected, such as a soundbar, a streaming box, or a game console, and we will plan where each cable goes before we cut into the wall.

How high should a TV go?

A common rule of thumb is to place the center of the screen at about eye level when you are seated. In most living rooms that puts the middle of the TV roughly three to four feet off the floor. A bedroom TV viewed from bed usually sits a little higher, and a TV over a fireplace sits higher still, which is why a tilt mount helps. We like to hold the TV up and check the height with you before we drill, because it is much easier to move a pencil mark than a hole.

Can you set up a soundbar or surround sound?

A soundbar can be mounted below the screen, speakers can be placed and wired, and a console or streaming box can be tucked into a cabinet with the cables routed to it. Florida adds a few things to think about. Many homes have tile or stucco walls, lanai sliders, and high ceilings. Humidity and salt air are hard on electronics, so we avoid placing a TV where it will be exposed to moisture. If you want a TV on a covered lanai or by the pool, the display itself needs to be rated for outdoor use, and the outlet needs weather protection.
